R John Wright had always had an artistic yearning, so when in 1976 he became unexpectantly redundant, he thought he would try something new – an old idea, and began crafting his first fabric doll. Albeit crude, he immediately saw how to make improvements and alterations. Within just a few weeks he sold his first line of six – rustic dressed, felt dolls for $14 each. Within that same day, all had sold for $28 dollars each and a re-order was immediately placed. Over the next six months he perfected his technique, with sophisticated construction, joints and detailing. Inspired by Kathe Kruse and her fabulous moulded felt dolls, John & his wife Susan embarked on a mission to bring back the technique, that would grant R.J. Wright to produce dolls with moulded faces.
