Pelham Puppets have bought fun, entertainment and intrigue, for longer than they had been trading (1947 – 1993) and have included Sandy McBoozle since the day he was ‘born’ 22nd June 1947. Bob Pelham took inspiration from when he saw an ‘entertaining the troops’ show, whilst serving in North Africa during WWII. It featured an acclaimed talent at the time, in the form of Scottish entertainer Will Fyffee. It is from one of Mr Fyffee’s characters, that the red faced, drunken Scotsman was created with his whisky in one hand, red cheeks and traditional dress. Back then it was how the general public saw their highland neighbours, of course today would be a different matter.
Sandy is 32cm / 12.5″ in size and connected with the use of 12 strings and metal loops, with rods to activate movement. He wears a green wool felt tam O’shanter, with a pink pom pom, black velvet dress jacket, red tartan skirt complete with fluffy white sporran, painted tartan below-knee socks with red garters, fluffy white hair, wooden whisky bottle and cotton handkerchief, which has frayed overtime around the edges.
He can open his mouth and move his bottle up to his lips, wave his handkerchief or move up to his mouth, shrug his shoulders and dance a jig (if you know how to operate him).
His exquisite paintwork is unchipped, with much attention paid to detail. Remember as each is handmade and hand painted, no two will ever be the same. He comes in an original 1969 – 1980 designed box, featuring his image and a complete printed sheet of instructions. Point to note. The box has suffered some storage damage and shows evidence of this, (please see all images), however it doesn’t distract from the puppet and is reflected in the price.
